Acerca de Monica Calvo:

Reviewing the requirements to apply, I consider my work experience could be of great use in this position. For over 10 years, I worked as a journalist and editor of the magazine department at Grupo Nación (most important newspaper in Costa Rica). During this period, I developed great writing skills that led me to become a publisher and to establish new products such as BienESTAR (health magazine) and ABConstrucción (construction magazine).

Then, I worked almost six years for Comunicación Corporativa Ketchum (CCK) as an account manager. From this position, I attended clients from different industries including NGOs, banks, pharmaceuticals, industry, real estate development, technology, food industry, cooperatives, academy (Earth University), amongst others. My job was to advise them on topics such as media relations, brand communication, corporate public relations, community relations, public affairs, communication with business partners (B2B), communication with clients (B2C), workplace communication, change management, spokespersons training, event management, social responsibility, care and crisis prevention, among others.

Then, I worked for Habitat for Humanity International Latin America & Caribbean office as a public relations and content manager. I worked on topics such as media relations (in 19 countries of our region), brand communication, corporate public relations, community relations, public affairs, strategic communication with regional offices, spokespersons training, regional event management, care and crisis prevention, among others. This work includes the coordination with 19 regional offices and global stakeholders in different topics, as well with the headquarters based in Atlanta, USA. 

During my time working at CCK and HFHI I learned closely about the dynamics of the Latin American media and developed the ability to coordinate and direct communication strategies for the entire region. I believe that this regional experience could be one of my greatest strengths for this position.

For almost 3 years, I have been working as a  Public Relations & Corporate Responsibility manager at Tigo Costa Rica. In this position, I oversee coordinating and executing of: External communication (PR agency and media), Corporate responsibility (strategy and coordination with partners), accountability of achievements (ESG) in CR, Marketing (product launches, advertorial coordination, etc.), Contingency (business continuity), Risk Management, Communication with clients (coordination of external communications such as technology changes, complaints, price increase, among others), Operational (outgoing payments, office closings), Digitization of service channels, among others. Besides, I support the area of ​​public affairs in relations with government, ministries, academia, state institutions, among others.

In addition to my career as a journalist, I studied a degree in Marketing Communication, which has given me additional tools when making strategic communication plans. 

During my work at the public relations agency, I received several training in public relations given by Ketchum New York staff.

I have a great passion for communication and one of my strengths is my ability to create positive relationships between different actors, this translates in the enthusiasm that I show when executing the tasks under my responsibility. I am a positive and grateful person and try to live according to these principles.

Public relations & corporate responsibility manager,  tigo costa rica

  • Strategic communication.
  • Institutional advisory on topics such as media relations, reputation, brand communication, product launches, corporate public relations with clients and stakeholders , community relations, public affairs (government), communication with regional offices, spokespersons training, event management, care and crisis prevention, business continuity, Tigo Sports channel public relations, among others.
  • Public affairs: Relationship with the different chambers of the sector (Infocomm, Camtic, Amcham, Chamber of Industries); I have even been a representative of the sector for Infocomm in some forums. Relationship with the Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications for the treatment of specific topics. Relationship with Ministries of Education, Ministries of Health (Compliance Unit) and Office of the First Lady of the Republic for the execution of ESG programs in vulnerable communities. Advice on communication issues for relations with Sutel (regulator). Relationship with the Presidency of the Republic to hold meetings with regional executives (headquaters). Relationship with mayors of different communities for specific purposes (infrastructure).
  • Internal communication: advice on change management publications (Newsletter, social network, amongst others).

  • Corporate responsibility: coordination and management of private projects and with public-private alliances, participation in business organizations and commercial chambers (participation in different forums as a representative of a private company in the telecommunications sector on behalf of the chamber), data collection and communication of results (ESG Accountability), content dissemination, creation of corporate volunteering, implementation of regional projects, webinars (different topics) organization, among others.

Account manager comunicación corporativa ketchum (cck)

  • Client advisory on topics such as media relations, brand communication, corporate public relations, community relations, public affairs, communication with business partners (B2B), communication with clients (B2C), workplace communication, change management, spokespersons training, event management, social responsibility, care and crisis prevention, among others.
  • Public affairs: Advice, strategy and monitoring of lobbyist hired for promotion and change in a new law (automotive). Closure of production plant (Ministry of Labor and Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism) and entry of new products and change in the composition of products (Ministry of Health) for a food industry company. Relationship with the presidency and mayor's offices for the inauguration of industrial plants, hotels and shopping centers. Development of strategy and communication materials to address government institutions for the benefit of agency clients. Communication advice and strategy for the National Telecommunications Fund (Fonatel), a department of Sutel.
  • Internal communication. *Transfer of a factory from Costa Rica to Mexico: strategic coordination with headquarters (based in Switzerland); spokesperson training; preparation of key messages for suppliers, collaborators and the press; management of an exclusive for a business media and contention strategy with other public media; coordination with human resources for outplacement programs and public affairs with the Ministry of economy. *Sale and purchase of a fast food franchise: spokesperson training and immersion on national reality (because the new owner is Mexican); preparation of key messages for suppliers, collaborators, press and the Government; press management; internal communication strategy for collaborators that included scholarships, flexible schedule, training in English and Costa Rican sign language; development of internal digital communication channel; social responsibility program and new owner presentation event. *Development of a strategy to improve the internal climate in a high-tech medical components’ factory: it included focus groups for middle managers; surveys of plant collaborators; an interview with the general manager; opening of internal communication channels; calendar of internal events for cohesion and the empathic relationship between collaborators; among other activities.
