Job Summary


The Head Coach will report directly to the Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Wellness. The Head Coach will be a positive, energetic leader with the ability to teach and motivate all student-athletes as well as the entire Athletic Performance staff. The Head Coach is responsible for coordinating all aspects of Athletic Performance of an NCAA Division I program that are specific to the institution’s Olympic Sports including, but not limited to, managing day-to-day operations; daily training programs and game day preparation; budget management; hiring and supervising assistant coaches; assisting with fundraising and adhering to NCAA, Mountain West Conference and University rules; and developing positive relationships with faculty, staff, students, media, alumni and boosters while interacting with department personnel and the University community.


This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.


Key Responsibilities


  • Coaching: Prepare and Implement training programs and coaching strategies. Promote an environment that fosters individual and team development.

  • Staff supervision: Hire, train, evaluate, supervise and mentor assistant coaches and staff.

  • Compliance: Operate the athletic performance program with integrity and within the scope and intent of NCAA, conference, department and university regulations.

  • Communication: Maintain an effective channel and level of communication and follow through, emphasizing relationships with sport administrators and support services.

  • Role Model: Be a professional representative of SJSU and a role model for the student-athletes, the department and community.

  • Media/Public Relations: Foster positive relationships with faculty, staff, media, alumni and boosters while interacting successfully with department personnel and the university community. Proactively engage in local and regional group meetings and organizations. Seek out public speaking engagements as often as possible to promote the program and university. Ensure all public statements are complimentary to the athletics program and the university.

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Excellent communication, organizational and leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated skill in training and instructing collegiate student-athletes.

  • Knowledge of current coaching methodology specific to the Olympic Sports programs.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in managing intercollegiate programs which includes exercising independent discretion and judgement.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the collegiate model of intercollegiate athletics.

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in University, NCAA and Mountain West Conference, Western Athletic Conference, and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rules and regulations.

  • Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to equity and diversity issues.

  • Willingness and ability to participate in fundraising, revenue development, and budget development.

  • Ability to organize and motivate student-athletes to maximum performance levels.

  • Ability to work, communicate and develop rapport with students, alumni, administration and community groups.

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.

  • Ability to demonstrate athletic exercise movements.

  • Ability to hire, evaluate, supervise and train employees.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or above while demonstrating certain exercises as well as with set-up and break down of equipment.

  • Required Qualifications


  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent professional experience

  • A minimum of five years of athletic performance coaching or equivalent experience

  • Preferred Qualifications


  • Completion and retention of CSCS Certification or USAW L-1 certification

  • A minimum of three years of athletic performance coaching or equivalent experience specific to intercollegiate athletics

    Classification: Administrator II
    Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
