The Department of Public Health and Recreation at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Recreation or Recreation Therapy. The Department of Public Health and Recreation is a multidisciplinary department that awards B.S. degrees in Public Health and Recreation, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in community health education. Our undergraduate programs offer concentrations in population data science, community health education, recreation management, and recreation therapy. A Master of Recreation will be launched in the fall of 2021. The PHR Department is one of the largest and fastest-growing units within the College of Health and Human Sciences. With the slogan of Achieving Health and Wellbeing for All, our PHR mission is "to cultivate a learning community, advance scholarship, and act as an agent of social change within the domains of public health and recreation through serving our diverse SJSU PHR students and alumni and partnering communities to facilitate personal and community transformation." ●Doctoral degree in recreation or recreation therapy or closely related field;
●One advanced degree or scholarship must be in recreation or recreation therapy;
●Individual will have research and scholarship that focuses on health among individuals and/or communities through recreation and/or recreation therapy services;
●Strong record of teaching excellence including recreation management and recreation therapy;
●Active research agenda with substantial potential for publications and funded research; and
●Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
●Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: recreation leadership, environmental education, Parks Rx, evidence-based practice and outcomes research in recreation or recreation therapy, program planning and evaluation, clinical and community interventions, policy development, event planning, finance , social and environmental justice, wellness in built environments, social determinants of health, and race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration, and underserved communities;
●Experience working with racially diverse students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of groups within higher education, and the profession, shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
●Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support historically underserved students;
●Demonstrated ability or potential to conduct both undergraduate and graduate mentoring;
●A Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS);
●Ability to effectively design, teach, and evaluate graduate and undergraduate courses, in traditional, online, and hybrid formats;
●An active and well-articulated research agenda, coupled with interest and ability to secure external grant funding; and
●Ability to work collegially on maintaining the accreditation of the recreation program by COAPRT, as well as contribute to the department’s strategic “journey” planning and action.
●Teach courses in undergraduate and graduate Recreation programs (classroom, online/hybrid formats), including recreation management and recreation therapy (Department Overview and Curricula);
●Leadership in the Recreation program, including oversight for ongoing assessment of student learning objectives and program outcomes, student advising, alignment of online and campus courses, continuous improvement of teaching and learning, and adherence to all COAPRT accreditation requirements;
●Conduct research, develop successful grants, present academic/professional papers, regularly publish in academic/professional journals, and contribute to the scholarship of recreation sciences;
●Work with colleagues to co-develop the department’s strategic directions, particularly regarding the linkages between public health, recreation, community engagement, and environmental/policy strategies for building healthy communities;
●Engage in community and university outreach to develop and maintain practicum/internship sites, curriculum resources, service-learning opportunities, alumni engagement, and development/advancement opportunities;
●Participate in analysis of and planning for the changing ecology of higher education and the public health and recreation workforce, including the development and implementation of a strategic plan and purposeful activities for continuing education/lifelong learning, professional development, individual certification, and program accreditation;
●Advance the rigor, visibility, and impact of our field through service to local, regional or national activities and improving student learning outcomes;
●Participate in shared governance and serve on department, college, and university committees as appropriate for rank; and
●Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
