The Command Center Engineer (Networking SRE) is a member of the highly visible Cloud Services Operations team and is a core member of the VMware Engineering Services Organization (VES). As a member of the Command Center, you will be functioning in a world-class team respected for its innovation, execution, and collaboration operating a worldwide organization. The team ensures continuity of VMware SaaS Services that impacts any significant disruption of normal operations of our enterprise service offerings and operates 24/7/365 days a year.
The Command Center is expected to provide a reliable service with an enterprise-level SLA and must strive for 100% customer support satisfaction. The primary objective of this team is to oversee and ensure critical applications and services provided are available and working as expected for customers and subscribers. The secondary objective is to develop and improve existing service monitoring tools through additional integrations, automation, and collaboration.
The ideal candidate serves as the focal point for the success of our enterprise-class SaaS service offerings across all of VMware providing technical skill and knowledge to the command center. It requires a good knowledge and understanding in different network technologies, environments and SaaS applications. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in the Network field, knowledge in Linux, AWS, Azure, GCP, Windows, and VSphere as well as development skills in modern scripting language like python.
This position requires experience in network monitoring, network monitoring tools and process compliance. It requires a good understanding of network technologies (such as Cisco Data Center Nexus Switches, ASR routers, Palo Alto Networks enterprise class firewalls, Aruba wireless Networks), Data Center environments, Internet and MPLS links support, Routing protocols (such as OSPF and BGP), SDWAN and carrier & vendor management skills. Required Experience & Knowledge Highly motivated, quality-conscious self-starter that requires little to no supervision Strong communication skills with an ability to relay incident details expeditiously, concisely, and accurately Ability to work with geographically disperse teams part of a worldwide operations team. Support and troubleshoot existing network environments and new networks. Participate in change control meetings, review changes – determine risks, modify as needed, implement, or assist other with completing approved changes, do network forensics and analyze critical performance network data. Monitor network usage, capacity, and performance. Experience with Tools like SolarWinds, Thousand Eyes, Nagios, Jira, BigPanda, Panorama (for Palo Alto Networks), Aruba Airwave system, or other monitoring tools. Experience debugging tools like Wireshark, tcpdump. Understand configuration scripts and troubleshoot firewalls, routers, switches, Wireless network devices and application issues within the network. Identify and isolate issues with complex network scenarios involving the hardware and the interconnections used for both Data Centers, LAN and WAN. Experience with OSPF, OSPF v3, and BGP. Knowledge with firewall implementations (layering, DMZ, SNAT/DNAT) and Firewall secure zones. Hands on experience with Cisco, Aruba, PAN products. Knowledge in Cisco VSS / vPC, port-channels (N*10Gbps), trunking, and spanning tree (MST/PVST). Knowledge of IPv4, IPv6, HSRP/VRRP, OSPF v2, BGP v4, MPLS, and VRF. Good understanding of traffic flows between end points, servers and on-premises/cloud services. Complete understanding of OSI model and all its layers. Complete understanding of the services and protocols on each layer of the OSI model. Good understanding of AAA, TACACS, RADIUS. Knowledge and understanding of AWS and GCP environments.
Required Skills At least 5 years of experience working with production networks, MPLS based networks, Data Centers and diverse carriers (internet and MPLS) & vendor environments (Cisco, Brocade, Aruba, Palo Alto). Rotational weekend coverage (still only working 5 days a week during weekend coverages) Working and troubleshooting using Linux OS distributions. Strong knowledge of Linux. Work experience on specific Cisco technologies such as: Catalyst 45XX, 65XX, 3XXX, Nexus 9K, 7K, 5K, 3K, 2K, ASR, FEX. Experience with: OSI, Ethernet, L2/L3 networking in the modern Data Center and its associated technologies as well as familiarity with various networking vendor equipment such as Cisco, Brocade, Extreme, Arista, Dell, among others. Expert knowledge of 1G/10G/40G/100G physical cabling / transceiver standards: fiber optic types/sizes/capabilities, transceiver types/options. Network Monitoring & Management – SolarWinds, Syslog, Thousand Eyes, SNMP, among other monitoring tools. Strong knowledge and experience in L3 protocols and functionalities such as BGP (iBGP/eBGP), IGP (OSPF, EIGRP), PBR, VRF, Multicast, route redistribution. Strong knowledge and experience in L2 protocols and technologies such as VPC, VPC+, MLAG, LACP, STP, TRILL, FABRICPATH, VCS, VSS Knowledge in Data Center protocols and technologies such as VXLAN, VNI, EVPN, MP-BGP EVPN, SDN, NSX-V/T Strong knowledge in security protocols, functionalities and techniques such as IPSEC, GRE, SSL-VPN, access lists, firewall rules, PBF, NAT, security zones, traffic captures.
Required Qualifications BS Degree in Computer Science, or a related field. CCNA or CCNA Security or CCNA Data Center CCNP or CCIE is a plus
