======================================================================================================== In 2017, UNHCR signed an agreement with IMAS (Instituto Mixto de Ayuda Social). IMAS is the public institution in charge of providing assistance to people living in poverty in Costa Rica. They have offices around the country, where socioeconomic evaluations are carried out and economic support is provided to families living in conditions of greater vulnerability. The offices are divided into ARDS (regional social development areas) which coordinated the ULDS (local social development units).
The agreement between IMAS and UNHCR was intended to facilitate the access of persons of concern to the national welfare system.
Currently, the agreement allows the presence of eight professionals in IMAS offices, in which specialized care is provided to refugees and asylum seekers, as well as to national population.
The staff must follow the guidelines of each IMAS office but must provide regular reports to UNHCR. The offices for which the services are required are the following:
The selected persons must work daily in the assigned IMAS office and abide by the protocols and systems of that institution.
